Include hobbies that reflect your personality on your resume. Avoid generalities such as: literature, travel, sports. It is best to describe your hobbies in detail, for example: read detective stories, trip to poland. Then the interest looks real on the resume.

Here is the opinion of one of our guide users, Gosia:

Thanks to such a great resume and letter, I landed a great job in no time!

1. Interests on a resume – what mistakes should not be made?

I remember one candidate listing his interests on his resume Japan and Samurai Culture. This intrigued me and I decided to expand on this topic in the conversation. It is a pity that the candidate’s knowledge of Japan is limited to watching the movie “Kill Bill”. Can you guess what impression such a person makes?

If you don’t have an initial hobby, include on your resume your genuinely passionate interests and be able to describe them. There is nothing worse than embellishing and presenting your resume in an interview. So it’s worth giving serious thought to what to write about yourself on your resume.

Don’t try to be original, and don’t write about something you don’t know. A list of interests on a resume (see resume templates) doesn’t translate into reality, it’s just a needle in the knee.

The sample of resume interests you provide (see our resume template downloads) should present you as an interesting and worth getting to know person. If you want to make a good impression in an interview, you have to know a lot about your passion.

Avoid describing your interests too much in your resume. A long list of interests is not a good idea. Note that this section only complements your experience and skills. Limit yourself to describing two or three hobbies. It’s worth putting them on one line so you don’t lose precious space on the page.

I don’t recommend posting about religion, politics, or sex (yes, I’ve seen bios like that).

Nor is it worth getting into controversial interests or interests that may have negative associations (hunting, poker). You never know how the person reading your resume will react. Don’t let her down in the first place.

Remember, properly describing hobbies on your resume can boost your image as an interesting candidate.

In the next section, you’ll learn which interests to include on your resume to gain an edge over other candidates.

2. Interest in your resume should substantiate your history…

Consider what qualities might be required for the position you’re seeking, and consider whether your interests can support them. Sometimes recruiters can learn from the interests section what soft skills a candidate possesses.

Need an example?

If you want to show that you are a team leader, mention your interest in team sports. It shows that you are driven, willing to take action, and determined to achieve your goals. I know a lot of recruiters look for this quality in sales reps.

Do you want to work in the creative industry? Showing your interest can validate your creativity.

Do you know what I’m talking about?

Make sure your interest reinforces the impression you want to make on the candidate!

See what your passion can hint at you:

  • individual sports – They may indicate individualism and a lack of willingness to work as a team, on the other hand they may indicate determination and a willingness to win
  • Extreme sport – They may notice a tendency to take risks, but also a determination and willingness to overcome their weaknesses
  • Team sports – Emphasis on teamwork and competitiveness
  • International chess- Analytical skills, which are very important for people who work with numerical data

Other Activities in a Resume

Other activities that do not count as interests include, for example, volunteering, owning a small business, participating in associations and foundations, running social media. This information can be added, for example, in a section project.

3. Resume Interests – Examples

Movies, books, music, travel, sports, fashion = cliches

Why?

This movie, in terms of interest, has also been reflected by people who haven’t been to the cinema for a year. Even those who haven’t read anything since “The Brebin Children” get into the books. Everyone is interested in travel.

Surprisingly, the vast majority of candidates still describe their enthusiasm this way. According to OMB SMG/KRC research, 41% of Poles watch TV as a hobby and 25% sleep in their free time.

I guess you want to stand out from other applicants, right?

If you’re really interested in movies, name a few directors. If traveling is your hobby, think about how to describe it in an interesting way.For example, you can write Hiking in the Bieszczady Mountains or asian culture.

Don’t worry about what your interests are.

Think about what you like to do in your free time and describe this activity in an interesting way. Remember to avoid controversial interests on your resume – it has to be something you can talk about in a job interview in an interesting way.

Questions about hobbies should be among the most enjoyable. Below are hobbies that a sample resume might include.

Interests – Examples:

  • Literature and Art
  • photography
  • fishing, sailing
  • sports
  • write a blog
  • ceramics, earthenware
  • gardening
  • cooking, baking cakes
  • Japanese cuisine
  • Listen to podcasts (on specific topics)
  • strategy game
  • mountain travel
  • Classical / 60’s / Jazz
  • Musical instrument
  • electronic product
  • Volunteer at an animal shelter.

Put your interests on your resume in an interesting and compelling way. Otherwise, you’ll get lost in a crowd of mediocre candidates. If you can’t or don’t know what to type, skip this section entirely!

Note: Include examples of interests at the very bottom of your resume.

resume hobbies

4. Should you put your professional interests on your resume?

If you’re really interested in your career, absolutely yes!

If a recruiter sees the resume of a programmer who develops apps or computer games as a hobby, or even if he is an avid gamer himself, chances are he will pay more attention to it. Such candidates are more credible and more in line with the image of the ideal employee.

Other examples of professional hobbies include:

  • Oenology, Barista or there is whiskey knowledge be a bartender
  • social media or guerrilla marketing in a marketing position
  • Foreign exchange market working as a financier
  • search engine optimization tools For candidates such as positions content creator
  • mediterranean cuisine Nutritionist Resume
  • Psychology and Children’s Literature on a Teacher Resume
  • Social and Organizational Activities in a Manager Resume
  • Automotive History in an Auto Mechanic Resume

As you can see, a list of interests on a resume can be quite interesting.

5. Ways to Describe Interests in Your Resume

Use this method if you really care about a particular job opportunity (and if you want your document to be a sample resume).

Check who you will be interviewing and learn as much as possible about the person. Check it out on Google, GoldenLine and LinkedIn. Why is this information needed?

People like people who are similar to them. If you manage to figure out who is in charge of the recruiting, and it turns out that you share common interests, chances are you’ll have an easier time getting an interview invite.

Try to connect with them during the conversation. If you get your employer to like you as a person, you automatically gain an advantage as a potential hire.

If you start sending out your resume, you need to know that employers can also be looking for information about you!renew my own Profile on LinkedIn. Make sure they tell the same story as your resume and there are no discrepancies.
